Book Review: A Rogue’s Rules for Seduction by Eva Leigh

A Rogue’s Rules for Seduction is the third novel in the Last Chance Scoundrels series.  This is a second chance at love novel. Set on a deserted Scottish island in a house party castle Willa and Dom meet for the first time, a year, after he abandoned her at the altar on their wedding day. Obviously she is not pleased to see him again as she is still distraught and humiliated! Now they have nowhere to hide and surrounded by her brothers, their wives and their friends  must address the issues that caused the wedding to not go ahead. 

Dom is handsome and rich and had only ever loved one woman - Willa. Due to his past he feels unworthy of her love and so he jilted her at the altar. This may seem slightly extreme to the reader but for them to get their HEA he will have to face up to his past and tell Willa what he has done. Willa is conflicted about giving Fom her heart and trusting him again after their disastrous wedding day. 

Slowly The characters go from hating each other to being friends and finally a very steamy reunion, much more explicit than most historical romances! 

I enjoyed this book, I enjoyed reading about the setting, the design the castle and the island.the humorous interludes between the main characters and the secondary characters. There is also a more serious side to the novel when Don has to address his past. I would recommend reading this novel on a cold wintry night as it seems more of a winter time romantic read!

Book Review: Counting on a Countess by Eva Leigh

Counting on a Countess is the second novel in the London Inderground series, written by Eva Leigh and published by Mills & Boon Historical. This is a story about a marriage of convenience which will benefit both parties as both will reap benefits from entering into it. Christopher “Kit” Ellingswoeth is a war veteran and recently appointed Earl of Blakemore. He tries to hide from his demons by going to the London Pleasure Gardens and gambling his fortune away on cards and other vices. Luckily for him he has been left a sizeable inheritance by Lord Summerby - the only stipulation being that he must marry within a month. Unfortunately for Kit a codicil in the will gives his wife control of his fortune so he will have to ask her permission for the money to finance his Pleasure garden. Tasmyn Pearce is his ideal candidate - not really interested in ensaring a husband he can marry her and send her back to Cornwall with a sizeable allowance for her troubles.  Little does he know that she is in London looking for buyers for the rum and other contraband she has bought off smugglers in her attempt to save her village, that she has been working with smugglers for the past 8 years and a rich husband so she can buy back her ancestral home Chi Owr from her Uncle, so she can continue her smuggling activities. Her ideal husband will be content to stay in London and also live on a sizeable allowance whilst she continues her illegal activities in Cornwall. 

Once Kit is aware that his new wife has control of the purse strings he realises that their sexual chemistry is not enough to ensure that he gets his Pleasure garden, instead he must get to know her. He travels down to Cornwall and discovers all about his wife’s altruistic smuggling. He, as an ex soldier, hates the thought of any illegal activity but rushes to protect her when her Uncle informs customs officials in an attempt to regain control of Chei Owr.

I enjoyed this book although not as much as the first. Both of the main characters are complicated and stubborn and both need money which is why they entered into a marriage of convenience- her’s is altruistic but illegal, His is decadent, immoral but legal. She is trying to protect her local village whilst    he is hiding from the memories of army life. There characters should be poles apart but somehow they work and component each other. It is a light hearted, fun Regency romance.

Book Review: From Duke Till Dawn by Eva Leigh

The first book in the London Underground series, From Duke Till Dawn is written by Eva Leigh, published by Mills and Boon and is a Regency romance. The Duke of Greyland, Alexander  Lewis first met Cassandra Blake two years ago in the spa Cheltenham. They had one night together. Not realising he was just a "mark" to her he lost both his heart and £500 which he naively gave her, believing her to be a vulnerable widow when in reality she was a con artist and thief.   His engagement to Lady Emmeline has just ended as she ran off with a cavalry officer.  His first reencounter is a glimpse of her in a carriage. He then meets her in a gaming hell in a seedy part of Piccadilly.  Cassandra Blake has gown up in poverty and crime ridden existence.  Her mother deserted her when she was a young child. She had to live in Marshlea prison when her father was sent there for not paying his debts.  When he died she was left to scrabble a living on the streets of London which is where she met her mentor and partner in crime Martin Hughes/Hamish.

When her mentor of 15 years and partner in crime takes off with all their money she has no one apart from Greyland who she can turn to for help. She needs to repay the gaming hell investors, the wages of her employees and the £500 she fleeced off Greyland.  He agrees to help, but she has to stay with him until the debts are repaid in full.  The rest of the book recounts their exploits  as they search for Martin.

From Duke Till Dawn is not your traditional Regency romance.  It is the heroine, not the hero, Who plays the anti character.  Historical romances usually tell the story from the "rich" person's perspective.  In this novel, however, Leigh tells the story from Cassandra's perspective and point of view,  revealing and detailing the poverty and reasons who she she has fallen into a life of crime. An erotic romantic thriller, Leigh is more explicit when she describing sex scenes and the visit to the sex club - the Orchid Club than other authors have been.  I enjoyed this book, it's a busy book, detailing the influences and experiences that have shaped the characters, especially  Cassandra, the poverty and crime that is seen as the norm in parts of working class London, how being abandoned by your mother and father dying etc all combine to make this book an enjoyable, fast paced read.
