The Billionaire in Disguise by Soraya Lane

 

Summary

The Billionaire in Disguise is a heart warming, gentle romance published by Mills and Boon. Nathan Bell is a billionaire who left London for New Zealand after suffering a heart attack in his early 30s due to his stressful career. He is currently renting a cottage on Jessica’s grandfather’s farm. Jessica Falls, a professional horse jumper is recovering after seriously injuring her back whilst competing. She returned to NZ to sort out her grandfathers estate and her life. 

Review 

The book follows the pair trying to sort their lives out whilst having a no strings romance. Quite an emotional yet gentle read as they both work towards their futures but will this push them apart.

I normally can read Soraya Lane’s book in one sitting but this one dragged. I found the storyline to be dragged out. The premise for the book is great and it is beautifully written, I just couldn’t get in to it.

Book Review: One Bed Between Rivals by Joss Wood

Introduction 

One Bed Between Rivals, written by Joss Wood and published by Mills and Boon Modern is a thoughtful eco romance.

Summary 

Thea and Farrell first met at university, she added an idealistic, studious student, him the playboy son of a hotel property millionaire. Thy didn’t mix in the same friendship group. 10 years on she is a successful travel blogger whilst he has taken over the family business and is trying to fix all th corrupt and damaging practices his father used whilst building his empire of holiday resorts. 

Thea has been invited to the opening of Farrell’s newest resort, an eco resort in th Seychelles.  Financed by Farrell it is one of many initiatives to try and fix the damage done to the eco system by his father. 

A tropical storm hits the resort on the first night. They are forced to share a bed in Farrell’s bungalow and the sparks fly. The media is about to  blow open all the corrupt dealings Farrell’s father entered into when building his empire. Will their romance survive?

Review

One Bed is quite a compact novel, the main characters could have been developed other more backstory. I Enjoyed the story being written from a dual point of view, it made the storyline more rounded as the refer saw the storyline develop from both characters standpoint. 

As usual with Joss Wood’s novels I enjoyed this book, I just wish it had been longer.

Book Review: Family Lies by Karen Rose

 

Introduction 

Family Lies is a suspense thriller written by award winning novelist, Karen Rose. This is the fourth novel in the San Diego Case File series. 

Summary

San Diego Homicide Detective Kit McKittrick and police psychologist/ boyfriend Sam Reeves. 

This case focuses on Kit’s foster sister Akiko. A recently deceased woman, Mary leaves a message on Aliko’s answer machine claiming to have information about her birth mother. Kit is shot and wounded when she goes to Mary’s house at Akiko’s request to find out what she knows about her mother and finds Her body. and the story develops from there.  Mary had been in touch with Aliko’s sensei and mentor (who was subsequently beaten up). The plot line is increasingly murky as they are drawn into the Japanese mafia underworld. 

Review

I enjoyed this novel, but I did find it to be very long and complicated with lots of subplots and characters that were superfluous to or didn’t add anything to the storyline. I found the name changing for the Japanese characters very confusing, and unnecessary. The plot line could could have been pared down without losing the overall direction of the plot. 

Book Review: His Forbidden Obsession: A sizzling forbidden love, secret pregnancy & forced proximity romance (The Martinelli Wedding Book 4) by Michelle Smart

Introduction 

His Forbidden Obsession is the fourth novel in Michelle Smart’s mafia romance series, The Martinelli Wedding. 

Summary

Niccolo Martinelli belongs to one of Italy’s oldest, noble, richest and prestigious families. His father is a Duke. Georgia Thomas is an unknown interior designer. She knows there is no future for them as a couple. Nic is having financial difficulties and so needs an influx of cash. The mafia Esposito family lend him the money on the condition that he marries the daughter, Siena. The Esposito family feel that this marriage will give their name social standing to go with their millions. Georgia and Nic have one last weekend together, he tells her about his upcoming nuptials, asks if she will continue to be his lover/ mistress and she tells him to sling his hook. Fast forward 4 months. She has realised she is pregnant and he he is the runaway groom. The Esposito brothers are trying to kill them both as their father dropped dead after Nic ran during the wedding. Nic rescues Georgia in London and they go into hiding. The question remains will they survive long enough to build a HEA? 

Review

I really enjoyed this novel. I think it’s one of my favourite reads of 2025 and the most enjoyable out of the series, although all 4 have interesting and enjoyable storylines. The novel is well paced, the characters gel well together. There are links and references between this and the other novels in the series that are not just an afterthought but work together. The book and storyline is well paced, doesn’t drag and it feels like the author really enjoyed writing this book. If you enjoy mafia inspired, secret pregnancy, alpha male romances I would recommend this and the other novels in this series.

Book Review: The Ruins in Which We Bleed: A Gripping Holocaust Novel Inspired by a Heartbreaking True Story (World War II Historical Fiction Book 3) By Steve N Lee

Introduction 

The Ruins in Which We Bleed is written by Steve N Lee and is the third novel in his Holocaust series - they are all inspired by true stories.

 Summary

In this novel, Helena (a 16 year old girl) and her mother are trapped in a Warsaw Jewish ghetto. during World War 2 and the invasion of Poland by the Nazis. Each page of the novel describes the suffering, starvation and fear that they go through on a daily basis. The ghetto is a hell hole and people struggle to survive. Helena’s story is heartbreaking as she has lost her teenage years, family, friends and neighbours just because as they are Jewish, the Nazi see them as lesser, worthless beings.

I can’t say I enjoyed this book because the storyline is so sad, showing how low humanity is prepared to go to “win”. Each page reveals the Nazi’s hatred and determination to wipe out fellow human beings whilst the ghetto residents are struggling just to survive whilst still maintaining their humanity and caring for others. 

I couldn’t read more than a chapter at a time as the storyline is relentless. The fact that that this is based on a true story made it even harder to get through. Helena’s devotion to Sparkle and the baby boy in the underground shelter, for example, showed on the one hand how the characters retained their humanity and caring selves but also how sometimes they had to do something they never imagined they would have to do in order to survive the nightmare that had become their life. 

Review

The book is beautifully written. The author doesn’t focus on describing the blood and gore, he lets the reader think about it by, for example, only briefly mentioning someone falling from a roof when set alight. He focuses on the characters and how their characters are shaped as they struggle to survive. The characters aren’t relatable as none of us will (hopefully) ever go through anything as traumatic as living/ existing in a ghetto but they do draw the reader in to feel for them and hope that life gets better in the next few pages of the book. 

I didn’t “enjoy” this book or read it in one sitting but that is because the storyline, whilst perfectly paced and planned out, is just so heartbreakingly sad. There are no real winners in war, there is just death and destruction and even though Helena’s story is set (and the real life version took place) over 80 years ago, it still feels like I was reading about her life in real time and it was happening as I read the book. 

I was lucky enough to be gifted this novel but I will download the two other novels in the series to read over the summer (they are currently available on Kindle Unlimited).

I was gifted this book but this does not affect my review. 

Book Review: How The Duke Met His Match by Sophia Williams

This Regency romance is Sophia Williams’ debut novel. Heiress Emma is thought to be about to become victim to a rogue ruining her reputation and claiming her wealth. Duke of Harwell, Alexander, steps in and claims to be her fiancé. He is not thrilled to do this as he has already been married once. His wife died and he is scared to love again but will do so to protect the young heiress. 

They enter into a marriage of convenience with the agreement that they both remain independent. They travel to his estate and meet Alex’s young sons. Slowly despite Alex playing hot and cold and Emma excusing his behaviour a friendship then romance slowly develops. Will they be able to create a perfect family or will past experience thwart their HEA. 

I don’t really enjoy historical romances as romances but I do enjoy reading them (as long as they are well researched and understand the social prejudices and strictures that restricted the lives of upper class women during the Regency period) as historical novels. I found this book did incorporate and understand the problems women faced despite being rich and the fact that they could face ruin if their virtue or honour was questioned so much do that in order to protect themselves they were prepared to enter marriages of convenience. Both Alex and Emma have strong characters and I like how the author develops them over time as they interact with the boys and between themselves.

Book Review: In The Greek Midwinter by Mandy Baggot

   

Set in Athens, Greece, this novel follows the story of Jen who has decided to surprise her boyfriend by visiting him in Athens after they had to cancel a romantic trip to Paris due to his work commitments. When she and her best friend, Bonnie, arrive in Athens (surprise) David isn’t there to greet them. 

Jen is obsessed by Christmas, she is immersed in it all the year round as her business is based upon it! whereas Astro, the Greek waiter she meets via an dating online website detests it! Slowly their relationship develops but will their pasts, especially Astros’s prevent them finding a future together? 

I loved the vibrant and in-depth descriptions of Athens and the green Christmas traditions. I also enjoyed reading the day to day interaction between Astro and Jen as their relationship grew and developed. 

Both characters are complex and they need to deal with the past before they can truly move forwards. The novel has two storylines, one is about the characters finding themselves and the second is their romance slowly developing  with a gorgeous backdrop of Athens at Christmas. 

This is a fun, festive romantic comedy coupled with self discovery for the main characters. A great novel to snuggle up with next to the Christmas tree over the festive period.

Book Review: Rachael Stewart What Happens At The Beach… (Mills & Boon True Love)

After losing her home and career as a bar worker, Fae Thompson is housing/ dog sitting for 6 weeks. She is minding Precious the poodle for her rich step sister Sasha in Sydney’s very expensive Bondi Beach area whilst she is on her honeymoon with her wife Gigi.  Sasha left Fae a long email of dos and don'ts but most importantly of all Precious wasn’t to come into contact with the neighbour Lord Cedric Alexander Pennington, otherwise known as Rick, as his dog, a Great Dane called Ralph, according to Sasha had gone for her baby like a piece of meat.

Fae meets Rick for the first time when they are walking the dogs and rather like 101 Dalmatians they end up entwined in the dog leads. Both romances progress, culminating in a disastrous gala for the humans, will they get their HEA?  Precious is unwell after the gala turns out she is pregnant and puppies are born just as her human mama gets back from her honeymoon so everyone gets their HEA!!    

I enjoyed this book and read it in one sitting The dogs added a touch humour and could have had their own mini romance told from their perspective as they were definitely part of the main storyline not just there to bulk out the word count. There was a sense of sadness and loss for Fae, she is the step sister who doesn’t fit in and has lost the places that she felt safe and wanted. She has an inferiority complex as her father abandoned her and her mother and created the perfect family with someone else   This has shaped her life and could ruin her future if she doesn’t change. Rick hadn’t smiled in years before coming to Australia as he fought to save the family home and business after being let down by his dad. The characters work well together, are realistic enough to both appeal to and be relatable to the reader.  The storyline is well paced, doesn’t drag has interesting and complex characters both human and canine.

Book Review: Boss With Benefits by Lucy King

Boss with Benefits is written by Lucy King and the second in the Mills & Boon Modern mini series Billion Dollar Bet where the heroes have taken a net to only go out with one woman from Independence to Labor Day to repair their images. . The winner of the bet will take all  accumulated shares and have the chance to take Helberg. 

Adam Courtney, the billionaire CEO, must remain celibate in order to keep hold of an acquisition that helps him lessen the guilt of his mother’s death. He is managing to remain so until he meets Ella Green, walks back in to his life to audit his firm. They have had a passionate encounter in the past and he knows how difficult it will be to prevent a repeat of this. Ella is also determined that there will not be repeat performance. She has been burnt both professionally and socially in the past and will not risk her career for mere desire. Can the pair remain aloof or will they succumb to their red hot chemistry?

I did not enjoy this book. It was only a short read so that made it slightly easier! A shame as I normally enjoy the author’s novels but this one just seemed forced.

Book Review: Illicit Temptations by Katee Robert

Illicit Temptations is two spicy, explicit novellas from Katee Robert’s Forbidden Games mini series in one novel. 

Make Me Yours is the first of the two short stories. 3 months ago fitness instructor Becka Baudin had a one night stand with Aaron Livingstone, the best of his life, then she walked away. Fast forward to now and she has to tell him she is pregnant. He is thrilled as he was procrastinating about how he could get her back in his life. He persuades her to move into his Manhattan apartment but she is determined not to be drawn into his flashy lifestyle. He needs to prove that he is not just the baby’s father but can also a suitable partner. Can it be done? 

Make Me Need tells the story of  Trish Livingstone and Cameron O’Clery. Trish needs a new job and so ends up working for Cameron (who is very grumpy) and her brother. They are opposites in terms of character. She is full of optimism and happiness, he is grumpy and abrupt. They know they shouldn’t have a fling as that could ruin friendships and business relationships. They cross the invisible line but how will it affect them? 

I didn’t really enjoy either of these books. They are Dare reprints so raunchier than the Modern series but not as explicit as Black Lace novels. I felt they sort of fell flat. They were rushed and didn’t let the reader Get to know or gel with the characters. I wouldn’t reread.

Book Review: Billionaire's Runaway Wife by Rosie Maxwell

Billionaire’s Runaway Wife is written by Rosie Maxwell, one of Mills & Boon Modern’s newer authors. 

Rae ran away from her billionaire husband, Domenico Ricci, because she feared she was losing her self as her mum had done, becoming totally obsessed and controlled by her husband. After leaving him she established her own bridal gown design business and found herself again. She returns to Venice as Domenico’s Aunt has died and she wants to attend the funeral. When the will is read she finds out she has to stay in the Venetian Palazzo with Domenico for 6 months or he will not inherit it. She agrees and moves back to Venice. During their enforced time together she finds out about her husband’s childhood: how he was so poor Lily treated by his mother and her family. She starts to understand him. He also realises her fears and issues and helps her achieve her ambition. Will they be able to overcome their childhood traumas and build a life together? 

I enjoyed the premise of the book rather than the book itself. The characters weren’t particularly likeable or relatable to the reader and there were loose ends that the book didn’t address - Domenico’s awful mother, for example, was brought into the storyline and then never mentioned again. This was a once only read for me. I wouldn’t rush to reread.

Book Review: The Anti-Social Season by Adele Buck

 

The Anti-Social Season is written by Adele Buck and published by Mills & Boon as part of their newish contemporary Afterglow series. Thea Martinelli is a burnt out firefighter who is starting a new career as social media officer for the fire service. Simon Osman is a librarian and social media coordinator who has been tasked with showing Thea the ropes and how social media work. Simon had a crush on Thea on school but she doesn’t remember him. Sparks fly between the pair but can they stop living in the past and move on to a future together?

I enjoyed that this novel is contemporary with a reversal of roles. Little was made of this by the author and I feel it would have made the characters more appealing appealing Z

Tebelievable if there was a bigger part of the storyline focusing on this, even if it was just Thea rescuing a kitten from a tree! Lots of humour and spicy romantic moments between the pair, and some fun little interludes with Thea’s landlady too. I didn’t enjoy the harping back to the fast. The characters needed to be focusing more on how they were to move forward in their lives. Simon appeared rather wimpy at times as he seemed to be overly upset about Thea ignoring/ not remembering him from school. The festive backdrop is a nice touch to the storyline but doesn’t overwhelm it. As an aside I hate the graphics on the Afterglow series, they make the novels look cheap and dreary. 

I would recommend this book as a quick read.

Book Review:Billion-Dollar Dating Game (Billion-Dollar Bet, Book 1 by Natalie Anderson

 

Billion-Dollar Dating Game by Natalie Anderson is the first in the three part mini series Billion-Dollar Bets. The three main men, Zane, Adam and Cade are best friends and billionaires. All three have a reputation as one date wonders but excellent businessmen. All three, each for their own reason, want to purchase Helberg Holdings as Reed, the owner, died several months ago. Zane puts down a bet that if they can date one women between independence and Labour Day he will take all the shares that they have accumulated and have a free run at taking over Helberg Holdings. All three men agree. 

Zane de Marco and Skylar Bennet grew up on the same estate. Neither had a happy childhood. She lived with her strict father, him with his mother. Zane slowly built his empire and Skylar is now an employee. After a night together he persuades her to have a fake relationship so he can win the bet and take over the business that destroyed his childhood. He/ they didn’t take into account that their fake relationship would develop into a true romance, but will their flaws and stubborn characters prevent their romance from being their HEA? 

Full of passion and pent up emotions that can be traced back to childhood, both characters are clearly flawed but likeable. The reader can root for them and hope they get it together so their relationship survives because they are relatable characters that most readers can empathise with. 

This is an enjoyable read, a bit of a slow start but the rest of the novel is well paced and full of chemistry. I would recommend and I am looking forward to reading the other 2 books in the series.

Book Review: Tempted By Her Greek Island Bodyguard by Michelle Douglas

Tempted by Her Greek Island Bodyguard is written by Michelle Douglas is part of Mills & Boon True Love collection. 

This is my first Michelle Douglas novel and I selected it as I was intrigued by the description. Set in the Greek islands a reality tv show is rebuilding a Greek island resort. Janie has a very overprotective famous musician as a father and actress mother. She, however, prefers working away from the limelight after being dubbed plain Janie by the press. She works with charities and so signed up to the reality show. Her father hired Zach as her bodyguard to protect her. He is grumpy and not thrilled to be on a reality tv show. Slowly the pair fall in love but will their love survive in the real world?

I enjoyed this book. It is well written, a very different storyline, more contemporary and fun. The characters are interesting and catch the readers’ attention and most importantly are relatable.

Book Review: Forced Vows: Arranged Marriage Enemies to Lovers (Syndicate Rules Book 6 by Lucy Munroe

Forced Vows is part of Lucy Munroe’s Mafia inspired Syndicate Rules series. Set in New York, Roise has agreed to marry Miceli to protect her young cousin and ensure she doesn’t have to. Prior to meeting her husband to be Roise goes out of town for the weekend and loses her virginity to a stranger - who turns out to be Miceli! Roise is determined to finish her education to become an actress even though as a mafia princess she will never be one. She butts heads with Miceli at every turn and this turns into a very spicy novel where it is the man who changes the most in order to ensure they get their HEA. 

I enjoyed this novel the most out of the whole series. The characters are determined individuals, the book is well planned out,  brings in characters from other books with cameo roles (although the book can be read as a standalone novel) and is well written.

Book Review: Revenge in Paradise by Heidi Rice

Revenge in Paradise is written by Heidi Rice and is published under Mills & Boon Modern collection. This is the second in a mini series - both the main characters were introduced briefly during Brandon and Lacey’s novel Revealing Her Best Kept Secret.  Roman Garner was raised on the streets, Unacknowledged by his family he has risen to the status of billionaire but is still bitter about his treatment as a child and young adult. His chance arises when Lacey’s penniless artist sister - Milly Devlin tries to steal Roman’s speed boat in order to escape a party where she has had a huge argument with her sister. Roman’s plan is pretty basic - seduce Milly to get revenge on his elder half brother for ignoring his pleas for help. Once Roman has Milly on his private island, however, he realises that she is nothing like he imagined and their attraction is off the scale. They have an affair which is teetering on a HEA. But will it all come crashing down at Lacey and Brandon’s baby’s christening when unpalatable truths emerge?

This novel has an opulent, billionaire lifestyle backdrop which I enjoyed. I actually liked Brandon’s character, I found Milly’s determination to not accept her sister’s help as she struggled as an artist annoying rather than endearing! It was an enjoyable read but the characters aren’t as relatable as the first novel.

Book Review: Think Twice by Harlan Coben

Think Twice is the twelfth novel in the series but it can be read as a standalone novel.  Myron Bolitar is a high profile ex basketball player/ sports agent/ attorney who resides in New York. He is visited by the FBI after a former client, Greg Downing’s DNA was found at a double murder scene. Greg supposedly died 3 years ago - Myron attended the funeral and gave the eulogy. Myron needs to find out if Greg is actually dead so he and his companion Win set out to discover  if Greg really did die and why his DNA is at the murder scene. 

I enjoyed this novel. The plot is full of twists and turns as secrets and lies are uncovered. As the characters are 12 books into the series they know and get on well together hence the humour in the dialogue. I wasn’t keen on the novel changing from the third to the first person a few chapters in but that is a personal preference.

Book Review: Lady Amelia's Scandalous Secret by Eva Shepherd

Set in Victorian England Lady Amelia Lambourne secretly owns and writes for the magazine The Ladies’ Enquirer, a magazine aimed at educating women. Her Aunt gave her the money to set the magazine up but now she is in need of extra finance. 

Amelia’s father wants her to be married and keeps escorting her to dinners and debutante balls, on one such octahedral meets Leo Devenish, a self made man who wants to buy her magazine. He isn’t aware she owns it. She becomes his friend influenced by the premise jeep your friends close and your enemies closer! Soon a gentle romance develops but will this be jeopardised when her secrets are uncovered? 

This is a well written book that gives an insight into his restricted life was for women in Victorian England. The book, however, does lack a wow factor and I wouldn’t rush to reread it as it drags slightly in the latter half of the book.

Book Review: A Rogue’s Rules for Seduction by Eva Leigh

A Rogue’s Rules for Seduction is the third novel in the Last Chance Scoundrels series.  This is a second chance at love novel. Set on a deserted Scottish island in a house party castle Willa and Dom meet for the first time, a year, after he abandoned her at the altar on their wedding day. Obviously she is not pleased to see him again as she is still distraught and humiliated! Now they have nowhere to hide and surrounded by her brothers, their wives and their friends  must address the issues that caused the wedding to not go ahead. 

Dom is handsome and rich and had only ever loved one woman - Willa. Due to his past he feels unworthy of her love and so he jilted her at the altar. This may seem slightly extreme to the reader but for them to get their HEA he will have to face up to his past and tell Willa what he has done. Willa is conflicted about giving Fom her heart and trusting him again after their disastrous wedding day. 

Slowly The characters go from hating each other to being friends and finally a very steamy reunion, much more explicit than most historical romances! 

I enjoyed this book, I enjoyed reading about the setting, the design the castle and the island.the humorous interludes between the main characters and the secondary characters. There is also a more serious side to the novel when Don has to address his past. I would recommend reading this novel on a cold wintry night as it seems more of a winter time romantic read!
