Book Review: Pug Actually by Matt Dunn

Pug, Actually is a light hearted romance written by Matt Dunn. The main character and narrator of the story is Doug the Pug, a 15/20lb dog who is determined to play matchmaker for his mistress (Julie). Julie rescued Doug and now he feels he should rescue her from Luke. Doug despises Julie’s current boyfriend,  Luke who is married and also her boss. Doug decides Tom would be great for Julie, even though he is a V.E.T. and the storyline is written from Doug’s perspective as he tries to set them up. 

This is an amusing light hearted Rom-com written from a doggy perspective. I especially enjoyed Doug musing about why there shouldn’t be lost cat posters because cats can’t read! This is one of my favourite books I have read so far this year. Loved it.

Book Review: The Guilty Husband by Stephanie DeCarolis

The Guilty Husband is a debut mystery/ Suspense novel written by Stephanie DeCarolis 

Vince Taylor and Nicole have been happily married for many years. Layla comes to work as an intern at the technology firm Vince is the CEO. Surprise: Vince and Layla have an affair. Layla is murdered in Central Park with no witnesses, and Vince is convicted by the media. He has told a few small lies to protect his perfect marriage image and ensure he isn’t accused of murder but he doesn’t know who to turn to or who he can trust. 

This novel is written in the first person for all characters which isn’t a literary device I particularly enjoy as it can get confusing as the narration moves between the characters. I didn’t find the characters particularly likeable, especially Detective Allison  Barnes. The storyline was well thought out and the murderer was a surprise, so although I didn’t enjoy the way the storyline was presented I did enjoy the premise of the novel.

Book Review: The Christmas Sisters by Sarah Morgan

 The Christmas Sisters is written by Sarah Morgan, is set in Glensay in the Scottish Highlands and tells the tale of three sisters, Hannah, Beth and Posy Mcbride  preparing to spend Christmas with their family in Scotland. Suzanne adopted the three girls after their biological mother and father were killed in a tragic accident 25 years ago. The story, therefore focuses upon the daughters, their relationship with each other and her, how the loss of their parents has affected them and their own families/ boyfriends. 

Suzanne is trying to recreate the perfect family Christmas but it is threatening to fall apart as the past comes back to haunt the three girls and their current issues and failing relationships risk subsuming the whole Christmastime experience. 

As a consequence of the death of her parents Hannah has been left unable to trust or get emotionally close to anyone. Love is an anathema to her. She is also trying to hide certain secrets which in turn is pushing her to her limits  Beth has become the cliched over protective parent and her marriage is falling apart and Posy wants to travel the world and ice climb but does not do so as she is terrified this will upset her parents.

The girls’ fears, concerns and issues must be confronted and addressed so they can move on, not only to have a perfect Christmas but also move on in life and finally recover from the horrors of losing their parents at such young ages.  Suzanne is the lynch pin to the storyline, holding the other characters together. 

This book is traditional festive reading fare. Combining a smattering of rom-com with family

Combining a smattering of rom-com wit and humour with family tragedy, sisters struggling to make and maintain family bonds and sisterly relationships  and placing them all in the snowy, wintry confines of Glensay in the Scottish highlands, Sarah Morgan crafted a well written, well thought out book that would not only appeal to her die hard romance readers but would also catch the attention of readers who enjoy familial relationship and interaction style novels.
